In Memory Of…

Dave Donald was a key member of the MDFS coaching team up to his passing in May 2025.

Dave held one of the highest national coaching qualifications in England, the UEFA A License. He was a National FA Licensed Tutor for Level 1 and Level 2 awards for over 26 years.

He was involved in youth development for many years coaching in the Huddersfield Town and Bolton Wanderers academies for well over 20 years, with many of the players going on to play league football, with some becoming internationals.

Dave had been a manager, coach and player development officer, adviser and mentor to numerous clubs in the Northern Counties East, West Riding County Amateur, West Yorkshire League and local clubs. Also at Huddersfield Town Ladies, Guisley Vixens and Bradford City Ladies.

His coaching had also been well received in the USA where he worked in the southern states in 2003, returning the following two years for a leading soccer club in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dave also gained a B.A. (Hons) and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. He also worked for a number of years at Kirklees College before retirement.

His impact on and off the pitch at MDFS is far greater than any words can describe and we wanted to dedicate an area of our website to him. A top coach and friend.

Our Ethos and Philosophy

At MDFS, we believe in the development of our players both on and off the pitch. We aim to develop the whole player across all four corners of the FA’s Long Term Player Development Model (LTPD).

These are to develop the player’s technical skills, improve the player’s movement skills – agility, balance, coordination and speed, increase the player’s decision making capabilities, and finally to teach the player life skills – co-operation, teamwork, communication and friendship.

Technical

  • All moves with a football including; turning, stopping, dribbling, passing (using both feet), shooting both unopposed and with technical practices.
  • Working through small sided games, both even (2v2, 4v4) and uneven (2v1, 4v2).
  • Allowing the game to be the teacher, seeing how players craft their way through challenges.

Physical

  • Improving balance, agility, running, turning, hand-eye-foot coordination.
  • Generic movement skills such as agility, balance, coordination and speed.
  • Football functional movements. These include; receiving the ball, running with the ball, dribbling, turning, kicking, speed endurance, flexibility, power, strength, recovery.
  • We also promote a healthy lifestyle through exercise and nutrition.

Psychological

  • Improving decision making and confidence on and off the pitch, by practising and learning as well as experimenting new things.
  • Developing confidence, creativity, concentration, communication, control and commitment.
  • We aim to develop reflective, resourceful and resilient players.

Social

  • Meeting others, sharing ideas and playing as a team.
  • Asking and answering questions, showing (through demos), after games shaking hands with opponents, team mates and coaches.
  • We above anything want our players to enjoy each session.
  • Behaviour reflection both on own and with other players.
  • Develop teamwork, relationship building, accountability, responsibility and becoming independent.
